Data and Evidence Preservation

Data and Evidence Preservation

After an accident, there can be crucial evidence to collect that may be lost by the time a lawsuit is filed. Tire marks from vehicle braking, post-impact gouges and marks may be lost when weather changes, the roads get swept or repaved. Vehicle damage, accident related electronic data, or information related to occupant dynamics and restraint status may be lost when vehicles get repaired or sold. This accident specific data can be memorialized by BioRec’s specially trained technicians and analysts utilizing techniques such as:

  • 3D laser scanning
  • Aerial drone imaging and photogrammetry
  • Event Data Recorder (‘black box’) imaging
  • Photographic documentation with measurements

Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics

As part of a larger case or as an inspection assignment only, BioRec® will conduct detailed inspections of accident vehicles. These inspections will include crush measurements, inspection of the occupant compartment for signs of occupant contact, and investigation of the restraint systems for functionality and signs of usage. The inspections will include photographs and video (if applicable). Also, if applicable to the vehicle, the diagnostic codes will be scanned from the vehicle computer. This data can help determine the cause of an accident (e.g., failure in the antilock brake system). If the vehicle is properly equipped, data from the airbag computer module will also be retrieved. This information can provide the vehicle speed, the impact severity level, the pre-impact braking usage and the use of restraint systems.

Vehicle Crash Data Retrieval

BioRec® has trained personnel and the necessary equipment to recover crash data directly from all supported vehicles. This data can include information about vehicle speed, brake use, throttle input, engine speed and seat belt use. Our trained personnel also have the knowledge and expertise to interpret the information and provide an informed analysis of the recovered data.

Accident Scene Inspections

BioRec® is available to inspect scenes as soon as possible after an accident. This is ideal to ensure that all relevant evidence is preserved. The inspections include detailed photographs and video (if applicable). Scene inspections can be conducted as a single assignment or as part of a larger case.
