BioRec has the ability to conduct analysis in the following case types: Accident Re-creations BioRec maintains measurement equipment that can be used to collect data during accident recreations. Examples include measuring the forces of a box falling from a shelf and landing on a store customer's head and the forces involved in an elevator making a sudden stop. Accident Reconstruction/Accident Avoidance Accident reconstruction cases involve a detailed investigation of a vehicular collision. Issues to be addressed may include vehicle speeds, impact severity, accident timing, accident causation, perception/reaction, visual obstructions and traffic signal timing. Accident Avoidance cases involve using the results of an accident reconstruction to determine whether an accident could have been avoided under alternative driving strategies, such as traveling at the speed limit or following another vehicle at a greater distance. Accident Scene Inspections BioRec is available to inspect scenes as soon as possible after an accident. This is ideal to ensure that all relevant evidence is preserved. The inspections include detailed photographs and video (if applicable). Scene inspections can be conducted as a single assignment or as part of a larger case. Commercial Vehicle & Operations The commercial carrier industry is governed by strick guidelines regarding safety, maintenance and operational practices. BioRec’s expertise, including a licensed commercial operator, allows for an analysis of whether the guidelines have been met and the role of compliance failure in accident production. [back to top] Helmet Effectiveness In a bicycle/motorcycle accident, the rider can experience a variety of head loads and injury patterns. BioRec has the ability to analyze these situations to determine the role of a helmet in preventing or reducing the brain, skull or facial trauma. Low Velocity Impact Analysis These analyses are done to assess the potential for injury mechanisms during a possible low speed type impact. The project includes an accident reconstruction to determine the severity level. This is followed by a dynamic analysis to investigate the occupant motion during the accident and an injury biomechanics analysis to address the potential for injurious loading. Medical Causation Analysis Unfortunately, the medical causation analysis done by most physicians simply involves the patient history (e.g., did they complain of similar symptoms before the accident). The physicians working with BioRec, however, closely examine the details of a person's medical records and imaging films to determine if the medical problem at issue is likely acutely traumatic in origin, pre-existing or degenerative. This valuable analysis can help scientifically determine if there is a causal relationship between the accident and injury. Restraint System Analysis For this type of case, an analysis is conducted to determine the role of a restraint system in preventing, reducing or causing an injury. Traditional seat belt systems can be investigated, as well as, airbags and child safety seats. These cases may range from a typical intersection accident to a multiple rollover situation. A Restraint System Analysis is conducted in conjunction with an Accident Reconstruction performed by BioRec or an outside expert. Slip and Fall Investigations Investigation of slip/fall accidents are conducted in a number of areas including the causation of the event, the accuracy of event descriptions by the claimant and witnesses, and the potential for the event to cause certain types of injuries. [back to top] Tire Failures When post-accident tire damage is found, BioRec can conduct a detailed investigation of the tire. This investigation can aid in uncovering the causative factors in the tire damage and accident. Treatment Necessity Evaluation In traumatic soft-tissue injury cases, it is advantageous to understand if the treatment modalities and duration of treatment were warranted. The physicians associated with BioRec have the detailed knowledge and experience in treatment techniques to make a sound and objective judgment on the necessity of care. [back to top] Unique Situations BioRec's well-qualified staff and technical abilities allow us to investigate unique situations that do not fit into a specific category. Examples include an analysis of a murder case involving a hammer blow to the head, the injuries likely sustained from falling off an amusement ride, and the reconstruction and restraint analysis of airplane and train accidents. Vehicle Component Failure and Vehicle Defects These cases commence with a Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics reading. Specific component failures, defects, maintenance errors and/or vehicle system problems will then be investigated in detail. The investigation includes a recall and consumer complaint search. The potential role of the uncovered problem in causing the accident/injuries will also be addressed. An example may be the identification of a brake failure and how this did or did not cause an accident. Vehicle Inspections and Diagnostics As part of a larger case or as an inspection assignment only, BioRec will conduct detailed inspections of accident vehicles. These inspections will include crush measurements, inspection of the occupant compartment for signs of occupant contact, investigation of the restraint systems for functionality and signs of usage, and inspection for signs of vehicle component failure and/or defects. The inspections will include photographs and video (if applicable). Also, if applicable to the vehicle, the diagnostic codes will be scanned from the vehicle computer. This data can help determine the cause of an accident (e.g., failure in the antilock brake system). If the vehicle is properly equipped, data from the airbag computer module will also be retrieved. This information can provide the vehicle speed, the impact severity level, the pre-impact braking usage and the use of restraint systems. "Who Was Driving" Determination During high-speed accidents, unrestrained occupants can be shifted within the vehicle and/or be ejected. In situations where no one is in the driver seat after the accident, this analysis can be conducted to determine the likely driver. A Who Was Driving Analysis is conducted in conjunction with an Accident Reconstruction performed by BioRec or an outside expert. |
